What's Next Alabama?

This 32 page booklet was designed for the David Mathews Center for Civic Life as part of a three-year deliberative forum series focused on issues of community, economic, and workforce development in Alabama. The booklet was designed to prompt deliberation and lead community members into discussions on three overarching questions:

1. Where are we now?
2. Where do we want to go?
3. How do we get there?

This issues guide was designed to bring Alabamians together to talk with each other and through issues, instead of just at each other and about issues. Participants are encouraged not only to speak their mind, but to listen actively, and take time to think through the intricacies of complex issues and possible solutions.

The concept of puzzles, in particularly mazes, was sparked from forum's three core questions. The idea that we are physically making our way to an end-goal, but not knowing how to get there makes mazes an ideal visual for Alabamians to better understand what they are facing and the mind set they need to have in order to solve these big problems their communities are facing.
